Operation Choke Point squeezing gun-dealers

Operation Choke Point squeezing gun-dealers

Talk Show Guest
Alan Gottlieb

The Department of Justice, working in conjunction with the FDIC, the Federal Trade Commission and other Federal agencies has developed a “high-risk” list of industries as part of Operation Choke Point. This operation, overseen by Attorney General Eric Holder, exercises an arbitrary discretion to interfere with relationships between banks and clients. They allow the government to issue Civil Investigative Demands (CID’s) which require banks to turn over information about business practices, consumer behavior, transaction data and proprietary business information.
The Department of Justice has for no apparent reason and without hearings or congressional oversight, placed storefront gun dealers, online dealers and ammunition dealers on the “high risk” list right alongside porn dealers. Like the IRS scandal, under investigation by Congress, in which political opponents of the Obama Administration were allegedly targeted and harassed, Operation Choke Point is targeting a gun industry that is in opposition to the government’s gun-grabbing agenda.

The Washington Times reports that gun dealers are complaining that Operation Choke Point is destroying relationships between banks and firearms dealers. Alan Gottlieb Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Founder of the Second Amendment Foundation says that this is an un-masked attempt by the government to put the gun industry out of business. Law-abiding gun dealers are wrongfully being treated like organizations that are known to be involved in criminal activity such as the porn industry.
These tactics are discriminatory against Americans attempting to practice their constitutional Second Amendment rights and they seek to punish an industry because of their perceived opposition to the government.
How is this any different from the charge that the IRS has targeted select businesses and individuals asks Alan Gottlieb. Congress should investigate the Department of Justice and for the same reason that they are investigating the IRS.
