Is Connecticut Gun-Grab Comparable to Weimar German Gun-Grab?

Alan Gottlieb, Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and Founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, calls the ongoing gun confiscation program in Connecticut analogous to the gun grab that occurred in Weimar Germany in the 1920’s.

In 1919, after Germany was defeated in World War I, the government passed Regulations on Weapons Ownership, which declared that all firearms, as well as all kinds of firearms ammunition, are to be surrendered immediately. Anyone found with a firearm in Germany was subject to five years imprisonment and a fine of 100,000 marks.  While the law was slightly relaxed in 1928, the German people had been successfully disarmed by then.

While the law was slightly relaxed in 1928, the German people had already been successfully disarmed. In the 1930’s, the Nazi government set up a national police, the infamous Gestapo, which held a virtual monopoly on the ownership of firearms and ammunition. The Gestapo had little to fear when they approached a citizen whom they deemed an enemy of the State.

Connecticut law is now bordering on the Weimar example. However, Connecticut has gone one step further than demanding registration.  The state is now threatening outright confiscation, an unprecedented move in American politics.Connecticut law SB 1160  bans the arbitrarily defined assault weapons. This includes revolvers and shotguns, which now must be registered or the owner faces confiscation and possible felony charges which include a possible prison sentence for violators.

An estimated 350 thousand gun owners have so far refused to comply—partially in response to the harassment that has been heaped upon those gun owners who did comply. Those gun owners have been receiving threatening letters from the state demanding that they surrender their guns.

Either Connecticut has turned law-abiding gun owners into potential felons or, if they register, they become citizens on a watch list comparable to that which the state keeps for sex offenders. Never before in America has a state moved in such a freedom depriving direction. We should learn the lessons of history.
