PRESS RELESE: Female Ivy Leaguer Denied Right to Carry Gun to Defend Herself from Stalker
TALK SHOW GUEST:
Alan Gottlieb, Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and founder of the Second Amendment Foundation condemns Dartmouth College for denying their female student Taylor Woolrich, who has been stalked since high-school by a dangerous predator, from carrying a concealed handgun. Woolrich can legally obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun in New Hampshire where Dartmouth College is located.
Gottlieb notes that, “This irresponsible decision by the Dartmouth College Administration is particularly ironic in light of widespread reports of a national increase in violent sexual assaults against female college students.” The Dartmouth administrators apparently haven’t been paying attention to this rise in violence which has, according to numerous reports, reached epidemic proportions. “Either they don’t care or they value their gun-grabbing agenda over the lives of their female students,” observes Gottlieb.
Here we have a 20-year-old female student who says she may have to give up her dream of obtaining an Ivy league education because the prestigious college refuses to allow her to take reasonable steps to defend herself.
The predator, who harassed her continuously during her first two years at Dartmouth, was picked up by police with a slip noose, a knife, gloves and other items found in his car. He is currently in jail in San Diego County, accused of violating the restraining order and felony stalking, as well as other charges. His next court date is Aug. 20. If convicted, his maximum sentence would be four years.
The pro-gun rights Crime Prevention Research Center, in a study published on Monday, Aug. 4, said there have been no reported problems or issues with college-age permit holders on campuses in the nine states – Colorado, Florida,Wisconsin, Utah, Pennsylvania,Oregon, Mississippi, Kansas and Idaho – whose laws mandate that students and others be permitted to carry concealed handguns on public college grounds.
Gottlieb raises the obvious when he observes that allowing students with proper handgun training and with lawful permits to carry concealed weapons would be the best safeguard in terms of preventing the overall increase in violence on campus by killers in possession of illegal weapons.
Meanwhile, if her stalker is let out of jail after his Aug. 20 court date, Taylor Woolrich will have to drop out of school.
