Chuck Morse, syndicated radio talk show host and author of The Counter-Fabians – Republicans in the Age of Obama, insists that ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, must be opposed by Congress. “This act is, essentially, affirmative action for homosexuals, and for this reason it should be opposed,” notes Morse.
Affirmative Action was appropriate for African-Americans because they suffered from over a century of discrimination that was so pervasive that the solution of a counter-discrimination policy was in order. Black people suffered from government discrimination known as Jim Crow, and from discrimination that caused them to be barred from businesses and from living in certain neighborhoods. It could be argued that Affirmative Action, which discriminates against white people, was justified due to the severity of the problem.
This is just not the case with homosexuals who tend to be more affluent than the population at large. Certainly there are cases of discrimination against homosexuals, but the numbers don’t rise to the level as to require federal intervention. We all discriminate; for example, a liberal group such as Planned Parenthood would not likely hire a pro-life conservative. For the same reason, a fundamentalist Christian who believes that homosexuality is a sin should not be coerced by the government to hire a homosexual. In reverse, a homosexual group should not be coerced to include a fundamentalist Christian.
The best approach to this particular question, discrimination against homosexuals, is to let the free market and the good judgment of the citizen sort it out. The criminalization of what should be viewed as private choices, whether we agree or not with those choices, should be rejected in this case.
