Democrat Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has repeatedly let the proverbial cat out of the bag by mentioning that when Judge Neil Gorsuch faces confirmation hearings Monday, the Supreme Court nominee will be quizzed “on his positions on abortion rights and gun control.”
Make no mistake about it, anti-gunners who last year expected the high court balance to shift, either with a Barack Obama nominee or under an anticipated President Hillary Rodham Clinton, cannot abide Gorsuch filling the seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia more than one year ago. Blumenthal, a perennial gun control supporter, noted to CNN Monday that “he’s concerned about Gorsuch’s judicial independence considering that ideologically conservative groups lobbied (President Donald) Trump for his nomination.”
Over the weekend, he told WTNH News that he will ask Judge Gorsuch “about gun control and consumer protection.”
Rest assured that Blumenthal would utter nary a peep if Clinton had won in November and had been lobbied by liberal groups to nominate a liberal anti-gunner to the Supreme Court. The gun prohibition lobby was salivating over this one year ago, perhaps even expecting to reverse the 2008 Heller and 2010 McDonald rulings. Continue Reading →

Obama’s Unintended Legacy: A Better Armed America

Now is the wrong time for gun owners to slip back into the shadows. (Dave Workman)

New data from the FBI’s National Instant Check System (NICS) confirms what many in the Second Amendment community joked about for the past eight years: Barack Obama was the nation’s best gun salesman, and coming in a close second is Hillary Rodham Clinton.

But just because their threat to the Second Amendment has been diminished does not mean gun owners can slip back into lethargy. To the contrary, with Republicans controlling Capitol Hill and a Republican president, this may be the most opportune moment in decades for gun rights activists to reform the nations’ gun laws.

The legislative fight is well underway. National concealed carry reciprocity could become a reality. New Hampshire just adopted “Constitutional Carry” with the need for a carry license. A National Hearing Protection Act could become law, thus removing bureaucratic red tape from the ownership of sound suppressors (silencers). Continue Reading →

The Washington Post’s new slogan “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is apt given all the pressures now reshaping journalism (some from the Oval Office), but then, when you consider how the Post treats a few highly polarizing issues, their new slogan at times can feel insincere.

If there are two sides to every story, then, when it comes to the Second Amendment at least, the Post has only been telling one of them.

There are a lot of reasons for this, but one is they don’t have even one politically incorrect, gun-owning nonconformist like Dave Workman in their newsroom. They once had Stephen Hunter on staff, but he is a rare thing indeed.

In the 1940’s, Central Casting would have called Workman an “atmosphere” character for any newspaper newsroom scene. Today they wouldn’t even let his mustache in the door.

Workman is the type who only trips into a lyrical line out of sheer bluntness. He is after facts, not prose that paints a pretty picture or a witty line that would impress Maureen Dowd. After President Donald Trump’s speech before Congress, Workman wrote that a few Democrat’s “gave [Trump] a ‘thumbs down’ like privileged Romans motioned for the death of a gladiator at the Colosseum.” With Workman, even if you disagree with his conclusions, you always get the feeling he is trying to boil out the perfidy. Washington’s Liberal AG’s Anti-gun Agenda Takes Two Embarrassing Hits
By Dave Workman

Washington State’s liberal anti-gun Attorney General Bob Ferguson may basking in the media sunshine for beating the Trump administration in court on immigration, but he apparently can’t push his gun control agenda through the state House of Representatives, which is controlled by his fellow Democrats.
By no small surprise, Puget Sound media has overlooked the fact that Ferguson’s effort to ban so-called “assault weapons” and his backup measure to license and strictly regulate them both died in committee. On Thursday morning, KVI talk hosts John Carlson and Kirby Wilbur discussed this debacle, along with the failure of another Ferguson-backed bill, one that would have abolished the death penalty.
Instead, the spin on Ferguson is only positive for his challenge of the Trump administration’s immigration order, which has now been revised. Seattle media may be wearing blinders.
Ferguson made a rather big deal of his gun ban proposal last fall, which many believe was the launch of his 2020 gubernatorial bid; an effort to cement his liberal credentials with the increasingly far-left Democrat voting base in Seattle and metropolitan King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. But Democrats in the Legislature, who have to run next year, appeared to be in no mood to push a politically toxic measure certain to bring every gun owner to the mid-term polls. Once away from the I-5 corridor, the Evergreen State is still purple or bright red in many counties, especially east of the Cascades. It would be a disaster for rural Democrats to pass a restrictive licensing bill to say nothing of an all-out ban. Continue Reading →

Federal Appeals Court Upholds Maryland Semi-Auto Ban

By Dave Workman

The 4th U.S. Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that so-called “assault weapons” are not protected by the Second Amendment. (Dave Workman)

An en-banc panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a ban on so-called “assault weapons” in Maryland, with a  10-4 majority opinion stating that such firearms are not protected by the Second Amendment, a position that gun rights advocates consider “absurd.”

Judge Robert King, a Bill Clinton appointee, wrote in the majority opinion, “Put simply, we have no power to extend Second Amendment protections to weapons of war,” according to Fox News.

But dissenting Judge William Traxler, a George H.W. Bush appointee, countered that the majority “has gone to greater lengths than any other court to eviscerate the constitutionally guaranteed right to keep and bear arms,” Fox News reported. Continue Reading →

Senate blocks Obama regulation, protects 2A rights of Social Security recipients
By Dave Workman
The Senate voted to block an Obama administration regulation that could have tied Second Amendment rights in red tape for thousands of Social Security beneficiaries. (Dave Workman)
By a vote of 57-43, the U.S. Senate on Wednesday derailed an Obama administration gun control regulation that critics said threatened the Second Amendment rights of tens of thousands of Social Security beneficiaries with apparent “mental disorders” by adding their names to the National Instant Background Check System.
That regulation had been opposed by gun rights and civil rights organizations. It was one of the targets of Second Amendment groups depending upon a Republican-controlled Congress to undo some of Barack Obama’s actions, and it was an important one. The regulation rollback now goes to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it, according to Fox News. Continue Reading →

House Democrats walk down the Capitol steps after ending their gun control sit-in last week.

While the Everett Herald and Seattle Times today carry reports about an apparent home invasion robbery-gone-bad in Snohomish County early Saturday morning — one of the would-be robbers was killed — it might be a good time to ask anti-gun Democrats what they think about self-defense.

Indeed, according to Second Amendment activists all over the landscape, it might be even better to ask Democrats why they have such a compulsion for “doing something about guns” after the Orlando terror massacre. After all, they didn’t go on a political rampage after pressure cookers following the Boston Marathon terror bombing.

At least one gun rights leader, Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, lambasted Democrats last week for their “temper tantrum” on guns. He put it bluntly, telling Democrats that “Their party no longer represents the ideals of a free society.” Continue Reading →

Gun control beaten back again; now what?

·

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) chats with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) about yesterday’s gun control votes in the Senate.

Yesterday’s quadruple failure of four different gun control measures in the Senate was virtually a foregone conclusion, and it happened only a day after anti-gun Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) virtually acknowledged to ABC This Week that discussing why yesterday’s measures would not have prevented Orlando would be falling “into that trap.”

So, it is “a trap” to publicly admit that proposals Murphy and his gun prohibitionist colleagues were pushing would not have prevented Orlando, or, for that matter, Sandy Hook? People should take a step back and analyze what Murphy blurted: “We can’t get into the trap in which we are forced to defend our proposals simply because it didn’t stop the last tragedy.”

Now is a good time to ask Murphy “Why not?” If gun control proponents can’t be forced to defend their proposals, which are typically in response to some recent tragedy, should the public believe that these proposals are indefensible? Continue Reading →

Clinton’s hypocrisy erupts with doubletalk about guns, Orlando

Democrat Hillary Clinton went after guns yesterday in Ohio, insisting that people on no-fly lists should not be allowed to buy guns.

After opening her remarks Monday in Cleveland by asserting that “today is not a day for politics,” Hillary Rodham Clinton went full-on politics, demanding more gun control and in the process possibly misrepresenting how the terrorist killer in Orlando obtained his firearms.

In response, the Second Amendment Foundation ripped Clinton and President Barack Obama for exploiting the attack to press for more restrictions on firearms. SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb said, “Americans should be appalled that both President Obama and Clinton chose to attack the Second Amendment rights of legitimate gun owners instead of radical Islamist terrorists.”

“If the FBI is watching you for suspected terrorist links,” Clinton declared during a campaign visit, “you shouldn’t be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked. And you shouldn’t be able to exploit loopholes and evade criminal background checks by buying online or at a gun show.” Continue Reading →
